City are set to confirm the appointment of highly-rated coach Brian Barry-Murphy in the next twenty-four hours, with many fans excited but also some who are cautious and not so keen.

Barry-Murphy impressed during his interview with City, and Cardiff now look set to take a risk on the fairly untested coach. But, what is it Barry-Murphy could bring to the role that will get City fans on board?

An Identity:

Cardiff fans have been crying out for years for an identity, a clear style that City are playing that is clear and fans can get on board with, well Barry-Murphy will provide that for The Bluebirds. Though not a perfect spell at Rochdale, Barry-Murphy's side were known for their possession-based system, and it certainly caught the eye.

Since that, the Irishman went onto Man City, where he would've evolved this style. In a recent podcast with NTT20 spoke very well on a style of play. Barry-Murphy will provide a style, which in itself Cardiff haven't had for a long while, but also an identity to the way City are going forward. A certain Pep Guardiola was also full of praise for Barry-Murphy on his style, “The way the team has played this season epitomises the attitude and focus of all our young players. They work so hard – with and without the ball".

A manager with a clear style of play feels very unlike Cardiff City, but given recent years, that's probably a positive to this appointment. Barry-Murphy could be the man to drag this football club into the modern day.

History developing Talents:

To be with the EDS side at Man City for three years, you must be doing something right regarding developing talents. Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Oscar Bobb, Liam Delap, Romeo Lavia, James McAtee, Rico Lewis among those who have gone onto make an impact in the Premier League after spending a good while with Barry-Murphy.

Given the talent in City's roster this has to one of the biggest positives to this appointment. The 46 year-old will know how to maximise the potential of these talented players in the ranks. It should also mean Barry-Murphy won't be as sceptical as previous managers to use these players as well.

This will also give a better picture to supporters on which younger players are ready or not, as no one will know better than Barry-Murphy, and if they're not getting minutes, there will be a good reason for it.

Long-Term vision:

The appointment of Barry-Murphy gives a long-term vision for the football club. This isn't something you can give a few months to and expect him to fix all the problems, and if not sack him off in November. The Irishman represents a long-term vision for the football club, and hopefully will be able to see out the process he will put in place.

Barry-Murphy's shown at Rochdale and Man City that he can adapt to different squads while maintaining core principles. That’s key for long-term success: continuity in ideas, even if players, budgets, or leagues change.

If Cardiff City want to rebuild strategically, develop youth, implement a consistent playing style, and move away from the instability of short-term appointments, Brian Barry-Murphy is the kind of manager who enables all of that. He brings structure, style, and sustainability — hallmarks of a long-term appointment.

Tactically Astute:

Barry-Murphy has long been praised for his Tactical IQ and his deep footballing knowledge. While he favours possession-based football, Barry-Murphy isn’t rigid. He has used 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, and 3-5-2 at Rochdale and City EDS depending on match demands — showing formational flexibility without sacrificing style.

At Rochdale, Barry-Murphy was known for reading the flow of games well, often changing shape mid-match to react to opponents — despite limited squad depth. At City EDS, his half-time tweaks often resulted in dominant second-half performances. He’s confident in using tactical substitutions for shape changes, not just fresh legs.

The Irishman is adaptable, principled, intelligent. He can teach a clear system while tailoring to individual players, he also, excels at in-game changes and squad-building over seasons and prepares players for both success now and evolution later.

A Fresh Start:

This ties in quite nicely to finish off. Brian Barry-Murphy represents a fresh start and a new era for Cardiff City. An unlike Cardiff manager with Barry-Murphy having a clear style and being a processed-based manager.

It's a fresh start for everyone. From the hierarchy, to the coaching staff, to the players and to the fans. It's a total reset and is something fresh ahead of a paramount campaign in League One.

Barry-Murphy represents what could be an exciting next step for Cardiff City, if things are done in a proper way, this could be the reset every fan wanted.

Summary:

Barry-Murphy represents change, much needed change. He will bring a lot of qualities to the job that Cardiff have needed for years and years. This has all the potential to be an exciting appointment and a step in the right direction for Cardiff City Football Club.
