Cardiff City are back on the road as they travel to Home Park to face Tom Cleverley's Plymouth Argyle.

The Opposition:

After a disastrous return to League One, Argyle have turned the corner and sit firmly in the play-off mix ahead of the final few months of the season.

Cleverley’s tactics centre on a possession-based, progressive style of play that uses vertical passing, quick combinations, and third-man movements to break lines and dominate the ball. Out of possession, his teams press aggressively with a high defensive line to pin opponents back, while retaining flexibility to shift between three- and four-at-the-back systems depending on the opposition. He also shows strong in-game adaptability, often adjusting formations mid-match and using substitutions—such as introducing pacey, direct attackers—to change momentum and exploit weaknesses.

Argyle sit twelfth ahead of kick-off and could move up to ninth with a victory against The Bluebirds.

The Bluebirds:

City come into this on the back of a comfortable 4-1 victory of AFC Wimbledon in midweek. Joel Colwill opened the scoring with a powerful effort from the edge of the box, before Mathew Stevens levelled the game before the break. Second half goals Perry Ng, Ollie Tanner and Omari Kellyman secured the victory for The Bluebirds.

Cardiff will look to dominate possession with structured build-up, positional rotations, and overloads between the lines to pull apart a compact Tom Cleverley–style side. The Bluebirds should look to move the ball quickly through midfield and press aggressively after losing it, preventing Cleverley’s team from launching transitions and forcing them to defend for long stretches.

Opposition Player to Watch:

Lorent Tolaj celebrating.
Lorent Tolaj celebrating.

Tolaj has excelled since his summer move to The Pilgrims. The 24 year-old is an energetic forward who plays on the shoulder of defenders, constantly looking to stretch the back line with sharp runs in behind. He combines intelligent movement with relentless pressing and quick, instinctive finishing inside the box.

The striker came through at FC Sion and Brighton. After loan moves to Cambridge United, Salford City and Dundee, Tolaj joined Aldershot Town on a permanent deal. After an impressive season with The Shots, Tolaj returned to the Football League with Port Vale in 2024. After another impressive season with The Valiants, Tolaj moved to Plymouth Argyle in the summer. The Swiss forward has netted fifteen and assisted four since the move.

Last Meeting:

Cardiff City 4-0 Plymouth Argyle (2025)

Chris Willock celebrating.
Chris Willock celebrating.

In a highly anticipated fixture, City ran out heavy winners over Plymouth Argyle in the reverse fixture.

Ryan Wintle opened the scoring with a long-range strike, before Chris Willock quickly added a second for The Bluebirds. Second half goals from Rubin Colwill and Isaak Davies sealed all three points for Cardiff.

Team News:

Cardiff City - Gabriel Osho and Isaak Davies expected to be back available. This one comes too soon for Yousef Salech. Eli King remains out for The Bluebirds.

Plymouth Argyle - Lorent Tolaj available from the start. Julio Pleguezuelo back available. Late decisions to be made on Herbie Kane and Bradley Ibrahim Joe Ralls and Brendan Galloway out for the hosts.

Preferred XI:

GK - Nathan Trott

RB - Perry Ng

RCB - Calum Chambers

LCB - Gabriel Osho

LB - Joel Bagan

CDM - Alex Robertson

CM - David Turnbull

CAM - Joel Colwill

RW - Ollie Tanner

Score Prediction:

Plymouth Argyle 1-2 Cardiff City

This will present many tough challenges, but I’m hopeful City’s impressive momentum can pull them through what is bound to be a tough game.
