The Bluebirds have advanced to the Second Round of the Carabao Cup after beating League Two side Colchester on penalties.

Rubin Colwill celebrating against Colchester United.

Rubin Colwill and Kion Etete opened the scoring for The Bluebirds in a comfortable first 30-35 minutes for Cardiff; Colchester pegged The Bluebirds back with goals from Akinde and Taylor meaning after a goalless second half the game went to penalties. Colwill stepped up first and missed, however, after Alnwick's heroics and calm penalties from Romeo, Ojo and Ugbo, The Bluebirds confirmed their place in the next round.

Player Ratings:

Jak Alnwick (7) - What an evening for the Cardiff skipper! Alnwick saved the day for The Bluebirds with three penalty saves. In the game Alnwick was also impressive showing how capable he is on the ball. Has to be a regular this season.

Mahlon Romeo (6) - Romeo linked up well with Tanner down that right hand side and did his defensive duties well. Romeo made 12 passes into the final third just showing that he was keen to get forward. Also put away his pen very nicely.

Xavier Benjamin (5) - Despite some nice blocks, Benjamin loses his man for both goals which unfortunately is just the basics of defending. Was decent on the ball and will improve with more game time.

Jack Simpson (5.5) - Not the best evening for Simpson who struggled against Akinde. For the more experienced player in the backline you'd expect some more organisation for the two goals especially. I feel Simpson gets more criticism than he should, however he wasn't the best tonight.

Jamilu Collins (5) - Not a very good return for The Commander who really struggled against Jayden Fevrier and Junior Tchamadeu. For the first goal he was beaten far too easily and he could have done better for the second as well. Think it needs to be taken into consideration he hasn't played in almost a year, but room to improve for JC.

Romaine Sawyers (6.5) - A decent return for Sawyers who controlled the game in the midfield. Nine passes into the final third shows what Sawyers brought to the team tonight, he did well in picking up the ball from deep and getting forward. Really think he can do well under Bulut.

Andy Rinomhota (7) - A good typical performance for Rino tonight, seemed to be everywhere and was good going forward and defensively. After a difficult pre season it's nice to see him back to his best.

Rubin Colwill (7.5) MOTM - Ran the show going forward tonight creating five chances. A deserved goal and was denied of what would've been a great goal. We saw the Colwill that excites fans tonight, let's hope we see more of this Colwill.

Ollie Tanner (7) - A great evening for Tanner who was unlucky not to get himself a goal. Tanner showed his pace tonight and his fine footwork and his brilliant first touch. This is the Ollie Tanner that Spurs wanted, if he can get that finishing on point he can be in and amongst this squad soon.

Kieron Evans (6.5) - A typical energetic Evans performance. Unfortunately for Evans when he was getting in good areas he was brought down straight away. However we saw glimpses of his trickery and it was a performance to be encouraged by.

Kion Etete (6) - Despite his goal it was a difficult evening for Etete. He found it hard to get past a strong Colchester defence. There's no denying he was fouled on numerous occasions with decisions not going his way.

Subs

Joel Colwill (6) - An impressive first senior game for Colwill who looked tidy in the midfield. Colwill was solid in defence and helped The Bluebirds advance up the field. Big things ahead.

Sheyi Ojo (6) - A tidy performance from Ojo down the left tonight. He did put in a decent cross or two but was also effective on the ball. Appeared to pick up a knock on his left wrist so let's hope that's not too serious.

Joel Bagan (6) - A solid performance from Bagan this evening who linked up well with Ojo. A good continuation of a good pre season.

Ike Ugbo (6) - Probably should've got a goal in the game. Well taken penalty.

Cian Ashford (N/A) - Hard to give a rating when he wasn't involved much. Happy to see a talented youngster get a deserved opportunity, hope to see more minutes for him.

Summary

A controlling performance as expected but nice to see some players take the opportunity. Hoping to see more minutes for Colwill in the near future.

The Bluebirds will now travel to St. Andrews to face Birmingham in the Second Round.
