Cardiff City are always sniffing around the free market in the summer, and assuming nothing will change this summer, here are ten player Cardiff should consider this summer.

Steve Cook - QPR (34)

Steve Cook is a reliable and experienced defender in the EFL. Crucially the 34 year-old has captained several sides, showing his key leadership traits. Cook is strong in his duels and is an organiser at the back. The defender could bring that personality back to the Cardiff City defensive line that City have been crying out for since the departure of Sean Morrison.

Lynden Gooch - Stoke City (29)

Lynden Gooch is another reliable and experienced option, with over three hundred EFL games. The American is versatile, being able to play both sides at fullback and on the wing. The 29 year-old is strong in the tackle and offers energy up and down the flanks. Gooch also has a track record of being a captain, also showing his leadership traits. Could be a good utility player that can play almost anywhere.

Ricardo Santos - Bolton Wanderers (29)

Santos is another proven option Cardiff must consider, The 29 year-old is current captain of Bolton, and also has over three hundred EFL games under his belt. The Portuguese is strong on the ball and strong in the tackle, standing at six foot four, Santos is also dominant in the air. The defender has shown his class at League One level over the last four seasons.

Paudie O'Connor - Lincoln City (27)

Paudie O'Connor enjoyed an excellent 24/25 season, and would be some coup for The Bluebirds. The 27 year-old excels in duels, particularly in the air, and is strong in the tackle, as well as being a major threat from set pieces. O'Connor has been The Imps' captain over the last two seasons, again showing his leadership abilities, which City clearly need to target this summer.

Danny Batth - Blackburn Rovers (34)

Having been wanted by Cardiff previously, Batth is an option City should consider again this summer. The 34 year-old has over four hundred and fifty EFL games under his belt, and has been captain for large parts of his career. Batth is strong in the tackle and the duels. Perhaps a short term solution, but one that should certainly be considered.

Marco Ilaimaharitra - KV Kortrijk (29)

Has some pedigree in Europe, and quite frankly it's about time we also saw some benefit from Kortrijk. Ilaimaharitra is a tenacious midfielder who likes to get in and amongst the action. The 29 year-old retains the ball well, and excels in a high possession system, which City will probably have in League One. It would be ambitious, but a good sign of intent.

Jack MacKenzie - Aberdeen (25)

MacKenzie is a decent option at left-back that City should consider. The fullback gets up and down well. Offensively is astute, being a front-footed player, and defensively is of standard. Cardiff City need to address the left-back position in the summer, and they could do worse than the 25 year-old.

Danny Armstrong - Kilmarnock (27)

Danny Armstrong has had three good seasons in a row, putting up solid numbers, particularly in the 22/23 and 23/24 season. Armstrong is a front-footed direct winger and is a strong crosser of the ball, who loves a shot. The winger is also a strong set piece taker. The 27 year-old also does his defensive duties very well. Another that would be a good statement, with Armstrong being in his prime years of his career.

Semi Ajayi - West Brom (31)

Another experienced EFL defensive option, who also has a history at The Bluebirds, having spent just under two years at City as a youngster. The Nigerian international is comfortable on the ball, and is known for his strength in the air, making him a valuable asset in both defending set pieces and winning headers in open play. Ajayi is generally regarded as a reliable and consistent defender, known for his ability to win the ball and disrupt opposing attacks.

Rocky Bushiri - HIbernian (25)

The Congo international has really come into his own this season. Bushiri also has been a part of a defensive partnership with Will Fish, which could make a move a smoother transition. The 25-year-old is as strong as they come, even for a centre-back. He’s got a broad, steely physique which enables him to win the majority of physical duels. The defender is tenacious and could be a coup for City this summer.

Summary:

Having conceded seventy-three goals last season, Cardiff need to address the defensive area of the pitch, with some strong available this summer. As well as some decent options further up the pitch to be considered.
