Following the departure of Erol Bulut, Cardiff now have to turn their attention to recruiting a new manager. Here are seven managerial options I think The Bluebirds should consider.
Des Buckingham (Oxford United)
Age: 39
PPG: 1.49
Club: Oxford United
The Oxford boss is the first manager to have been linked with the role. At 39, Buckingham is seen as something of a rising managerial star. But despite his tender age, he has no shortage of air miles under his belt. Buckingham's sides have earned lavish praise for their attacking, front-footed brand of possession-based football. Buckingham also has a history of developing and utilising younger players.
Raphael Wicky (Unemployed)
Age: 47
PPG: 1.97
Last Club: BSC Young Boys
His style appears to boil down to three things; having a high goalkeeper and a high attacking line, plenty of crosses into the box, and plenty of forward passes.
So it seems like Wicky is a coach who prefers a much more aggressive and front-foot style of play which will be great news to Cardiff fans. Wicky has success with Young Boys with an average age squad of 24.9, showing he can be successful with younger players. He's intense, but positive. Demanding, but thoughtful.
Tony Mowbray (Unemployed)
Age: 60
PPG: 1.63
Last Club: Birmingham City
Mowbray has recently expressed that he would like to return to management soon after a recent illness. The 60 year-old's commitment to a free-flowing, technical possession-based game is unwavering. Tony Mowbray's sides work very hard on and off the ball, looking to get things done swiftly. Mowbray is a possession-based manager who likes to see his sides starve the opposition of possession. The experienced manager also has a good track record of maximising potential in younger players, for example players like Amad Diallo and Jack Clarke at Sunderland and Harvey Elliott at Blackburn. Mowbray ticks many boxes that The Bluebirds need in a new manager.
Barry Brian-Murphy (Unemployed)
Age: 46
PPG: 1.80
Last Club: Manchester City EDS
Aesthetically pleasing football is probably Barry-Murphy biggest offering at the moment, hence why Manchester City took notice and brought him into their coaching setup. In terms of the style, Barry-Murphy is a firm believer in the possession-based game. The experience that Barry-Murphy will have gained from working as part of Guardiola’s setup would be invaluable. The uncertainty that existed at the U23 setup means that Barry-Murphy is used to working in tough circumstances while still fostering success and an attractive playing style. After an ok spell at Rochdale, Barry-Murphy is bound to want another shot at senior management. The Irish manager has a brilliant track record in producing elite talents, and would make the most of The Bluebirds' talented academy.
Slavisa Jokanovic (Unemployed)
Age: 55
PPG: 1.49
Last Club: Dynamo Moscow
Jokanovic always has his teams playing an attractive brand of football, focused on keeping and quick recovery of possession. When in charge of Fulham, The Cottagers were top in the division for pass completion (83.1%), total passes (24,857) and also the side with the most accurate short passes, second most shots on target and the highest average possession. It is clear that Jokanovic is a man with a strong belief in an attractive, possession-based playing style as well as in giving young players a chance. Jokanovic lines up with a 4-3-3. With the simple principles, press from the front, create overloads, and score as many goals as possible. Tan has always wanted a manager with these principles, and with Championship experience, it could be the perfect appointment.
Steven Schumacher (Unemployed)
Age: 40
PPG: 1.41
Last Club: Stoke City
Schumacher's style of play is based around speed, attacking and ruthlessly exploiting spaces in the final third. Usually operating with four at the back, he likes to play with one defensive midfielder and two No 8s who can score and create goals. A key part of Schumacher’s tactics has been the tendency to press and be generally aggressive out of possession. Steven Schumacher has earned heaps of praise throughout his career not only for getting the best of his players but for his brand of football which can be easy on the eye.
Scott Lindsey (Crawley Town)
Age: 52
PPG: 1.57
Club: Crawley Town
Don't see this being a popular choice, but Lindsay could be a perfect fit at Cardiff. Lindsey has built a squad with absolutely nothing and had to pick off scraps from other clubs, however Lindsay has got the absolute maximum out of every player, which ultimately led to his Crawley side clinching promotion despite being tipped for relegation in pre-season. Lindsey clearly believes in a possession based, attacking brand of football with the midfield two key in the transition from defence to attack. Lindsey asks his defensive three to mix things up, as his side's have always been capable of playing out from the back, but also going long at times. Lindsey operates with two creative midfielders in and around the striker, with wing-backs that fly up and down the pitch. Admittedly a big step, but Lindsey could be a cheaper but clever solution.
Summary:
All of these seven options have an identity and strong philosophies, that will allow Cardiff to progress by playing attractive football. Some expensive options, as you get what you pay for in the managerial market.
Also some fresher younger options who are set for big things, and could grow with the club.
