Cardiff City were convincingly beaten 2-0 by Russell Martin's Southampton.

Manolis Siopis and Josh Bowler in a duel against Southampton's Carlos Alcaraz.

Summary:

Southampton started the quickest and after 10 minutes they broke the deadlock through Adam Armstrong, a smart finish saw the ball loop over Alex Runarsson in the Cardiff goal who couldn't have done anything to prevent The Saints opener.

It didn't get much better for Cardiff as Armstrong doubled his and Southampton's tally just four minutes later. A touch from Mark McGuinness trying to prevent a Saints cross saw the ball loop over Goutas and Runarsson and there was Armstrong to head home.

The Bluebirds grew into the game after twenty minutes. Perry Ng and Manolis Siopis saw efforts blocked. With fifteen minutes left of the half, Yakou Meite was heckled down, nothing given.

Saints keeper Gavin Bazunu found himself in a duel with Yakou Meite, the ball fell to Grant with Bazunu down following the duel, however, Grant couldn't compose himself to get The Bluebirds back in the game.

Runarsson held a shot to deny Armstrong of a hatrick on fourty minutes. The best chance of the half for The Bluebirds fell to Grant, who found himself unmarked at the back post, but the winger couldn't convert from close range.

Che Adams had the ball in the back of the net seven minutes into the second half, however, The Saints third goal of the afternoon was disallowed.

Colwill, Tanner and Ugbo were introduced around the hour mark. Karlan Grant broke free in the Southampton half, and despite having Saints keeper Gavin Bazunu scrambling, his effort was just wide, just not City's day.

With twenty minutes remaining, Nigerian international Joe Aribo hit the woodwork. Ten minutes later, Runarsson was called into action again as he stopped a powerful effort from Adam Armstrong.

Kion Etete failed to convert a late chance, and that's all she wrote. The Bluebirds fell to defeat against a powerful Southampton side.

Next time out, Millwall travel to the CCS.
