Cardiff City have completed the loan signing of Arsenal and Iceland goalkeeper Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson.

Runarsson after signing for The Bluebirds

Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson has joined The Bluebirds on a season-long loan from Premier League side Arsenal.

Rúnarsson started his career in his home country of Iceland with KR Reykjavik where he made 3 appearances. In the summer of 2014, he joined Danish side FC Nordsjaelland where he made 60 appearances over four years at The Tigers. He impressed in Denmark and got recognized by the Icelandic manager Heimir Hallgrímsson and made his Iceland debut in 2017.

In the summer of 2018, Rúnarsson moved to France to join Dijon for a rumoured €1.5M where he impressed, he impressed enough and attracted the interest of Arsenal where he then completed a £2M move to The Gunners in the summer of 2020.

Rúnarsson made his Arsenal debut on the 29th of October 2020 in the Europa League keeping a clean sheet against Dundalk. He then made his Premier League debut in the February.

Rúnarsson completed a loan move to OH Leuven in the summer of 2021. He made his debut in the October in a win against Lierse Kempenzonen in the Belgian Cup. His league debut came a month later in a 3-1 win against Union SG. Rúnarsson then spent the 22/23 season on loan at Turkish side Alanyaspor where he impressed, keeping 6 clean sheets and saving a penalty.

Rúnarsson is a keeper who is comfortable with the ball at his feet and isn't afraid to play the sweeper-keeper role, often coming off his line to claim loose balls. Rúnarsson is a risk signing but Bulut sounds confident in his abilities so we have to trust his judgment.

The Icelandic international is coming off his best season in a while and The Bluebirds will hope to see that form carry on into the 23/24 season.
