Cardiff City return to league action as they host Phil Parkinson's Wrexham.

The Opposition:

In Wrexham's first season back in the second tier, they narrowly missed the play-offs by just two points, registering a 7th-place finish.

It's been a quiet summer for the Red Dragons as they've recruited just three new players. Those being Daniel Imray from Crystal Palace, Anthony Patterson from Sunderland, and Ben Whiteman from Preston North End.

Parkinson's tactics often feature a back-three system with attacking wing-backs, a narrow attacking width focused on overloading the flanks, and a high press out of possession. Key elements include a focus on wing play to create numerical advantages, rapid transitions using counter-pressing and counter-attacking, and using direct passes and high tempo to get into attacking areas. The team is known for being defensively solid while also posing an attacking threat, adapting its style from balanced to more attacking as needed.

The Bluebirds:

City come into this one on the back of a 3-2 win in the opening round of the Carabao Cup against Swindon Town. Yousef Salech netted a first-half brace before setting up debutant Jack Moylan to seal a winner with a fine effort.

Barry-Murphy’s side could counter this by maintaining patient possession to draw out Wrexham’s press, then exploiting the space left behind the advanced wing-backs through quick vertical passes and wide rotations.

Opposition Player to Watch:

Lewis O'Brien applauds supporters.
Lewis O'Brien applauds supporters.

It was an impressive opening campaign for Lewis O'Brien in north-east Wales. O'Brien is a high-energy, all-action midfielder who excels at pressing, winning the ball, and carrying possession through midfield, using his agility and low centre of gravity to evade pressure. Primarily a progressive No. 8, he brings a strong defensive work rate and the ability to drive his team forward, while contributing through quick combinations and purposeful passing.

The midfielder is a product of the Huddersfield Town academy. After a loan spell with Bradford City, O'Brien was a mainstay for the Terriers for three seasons before departing for the Premier League with Nottingham Forest. Loan spells at D.C. United, Middlesbrough, LAFC, and Swansea City followed before a permanent move to Wrexham in the summer of 2025. In the 27-year-old's first season at the Racecourse, O'Brien contributed with four goals and six assists.

Last Meeting:

The last clash between these two sides came in the Round of 16 of the Carabao Cup last season, with City running out 2-1 winners with a strong performance.

Yousef Salech opened the scoring with a follow-up from a saved Omari Kellyman effort. Substitute Kieffer Moore towered over City's defenders to head in from close range to level the tie. Will Fish netted a dramatic goal in the second half to give the bragging rights to the Bluebirds and confirm their place in the Quarter-Final.
