Cardiff City have completed the permanent transfer of former Aston Villa and Arsenal defender Calum Chambers.
Chambers joined Southampton at the age of seven, the defender continue to rise through the ranks before making his first team debut in August 2012, in the Carabao Cup against Stevenage. The Saints would win the game 4-1 with 17 year-old Chambers providing an assist.
The defender would sign a long-term deal with Southampton in the following summer, and was rewarded with a full league debut on the Premier League opening day in a 1-0 win against West Brom. Chambers would go on to make 25 appearances that season, and began to attract the interest of big clubs.
In July 2014, Chambers signed for Arsenal in a believed to be worth around £16M. Chambers made his Gunners debut in the Community Shield against Manchester City. The defender would go on to make his Champions League debut a few weeks later, in a 0-0 draw away against Besiktas.
Following an impressive start to the season, Chambers was nominated for Golden Boy in 2014. This fine form also caught the eye of those apart of the English setup as Chambers made three appearances for the Three Lions in 2014. An start impressive at The Gunners.
Chambers was out of favour in the second half of the season, and spent the majority of the second half of the 14/15 season on the bench. In the 15/16 season Chambers continued to be out of favour, and made 22 appearances in all competitions.
Chambers started on the opening day of the 16/17 and scored against Liverpool. The English international then joined Middlesbrough on loan for the remainder of the season. Chambers become a key figure at Boro, making 26 appearances, however Chambers couldn't help his side avoid relegation from the Premier League.
Chambers returned to Arsenal for the following season, but struggled with injuries. The defender still went on to make 22 appearances in all competitions, Chambers was a key figure in The Gunners' run to the Europa League final, making 8 appearances in the competition.
Chambers was on the move again in 18/19 season. The defender joined Fulham on loan for the season. In his time at The Whites, Chambers was utilised as a midfielder, and went on to win the club's Player of the Season after impressing in his new role. However, Chambers couldn't help his side beat the drop.
After an impressive season at Fulham, Chambers appeared to be a part of the plans, making 14 Premier League appearances, before rupturing his ACL on the 29th December 2019. It would take Chambers almost a calendar year to make his return, as he returned on the 3rd of December 2020 in a 4-1 win over Rapid Vienna.
Chambers would go on to make 16 appearances between then and the end of the season. Chambers found himself out of favour in the first half of the 21/22 season, making just five appearances in all competitions. The defender would join fellow Premier League side Aston Villa on a free transfer.
The then 27 year-old would make 11 appearances in the remainder of the season, netting once. Chambers would go on to make 17 appearances in all competitions in the following season as Aston Villa qualified for the Conference League.
Chambers made just 8 appearances last season, showing his days at Villa Park were numbered. After a lot of Championship interest this summer, the 29 year-old has joined Cardiff for a nominal fee.
