Cardiff City are back in competitive action as they host Swindon Town in the First Round of the Carabao Cup.

The Opposition:
In Ian Holloway's first full season in charge, Swindon looked in pole position to secure automatic promotion for large parts of the season, before falling away in the last quarter of the season. The Robins recorded a ninth placed finish.
After a large player turnover last summer, it has been a quieter summer this time around. Holloway has recruited Mitch Clark from Port Vale, James Debayo from Hull City, Stephan Negru from Oxford United, Sam Inwood from Bolton Wanderers, Kaelan Majekodunmi from Olympic Kingsway, Joseph Hungbo from Wigan Athletic and Matt Virtue from Fleetwood Town so far this summer.
Holloway's management style is often characterized by an emphasis on attacking football, positive energy, and strong man-management. He is known for encouraging creative play, aiming to entertain fans with a high-scoring, attacking approach. He also values a strong team spirit and resilience.
The Bluebirds:
Cardiff come into this one on the back of a dominant 4-1 win over Italian powerhouse AS Roma. Cian Ashford netted a brace, whilst Yousef Salech and Ollie Tanner both got on the scoresheet as City close a successful pre season.
City could look to control possession and dictate the tempo, limiting opportunities for Holloway's players to turn the contest into direct, transitional battles. Quick passing combinations and intelligent movement between the lines would aim to pull Holloway's typically organised defensive shape out of position, creating space in central areas. Out of possession, Barry-Murphy's high pressing and coordinated counter-press would seek to prevent direct balls forward and force turnovers before Holloway's side can launch fast attacks.
Opposition Player to Watch:

Drinan netted twenty-one times in League Two last campaign, and is bound to cause City all sorts of problems with his physical presence, intelligent movement, clinical finishing and relentless work rate, allowing him to both lead the line effectively and exploit space in and around the penalty area.
The striker's senior career started at Irish side Waterford. After five appearances, Drinan would make the move across the pond with Mick McCarthy at Ipswich Town. Struggling loan spells at Sutton United, Waterford, GAIS and Ayr United followed, before a permanent departure from Portman Road in 2021, with Drinan joining Leyton Orient. After netting twenty goals across two and a half seasons at Orient, Drinan joined current side Swindon Town in February 2024. Drinan has just recorded his career-best campaign at Swindon, netting twenty-eight goals in all competitions.
Last Meeting:
Cardiff City 2-1 Swindon Town (2025)

These two sides met in this exact round of the same competition last season, as The Bluebirds ran out winners thanks to goals from Cian Ashford and Rubin Colwill.
Ashford was the quickest to pounce on a parried header by Joel Bagan to tap-in from close range, before Rubin Colwill cannoned a free-kick into the top right corner from the edge of the box to double City's lead. Swindon got one back through the tricky debutant Princewill Ehibatiomhan, however it wasn't enough for the visitors as Cardiff advanced through to the Second Round.
Team News:
Cardiff City - Jack Moylan available to make debut. Late decisions to be made on Dylan Lawlor and Rubin Colwill after suffering with injuries throughout pre season.
Swindon Town - Ollie Clarke, Stephan Negru, James Debayo and Mitch Clark expected to feature despite limited pre season involvement. Gavin Kilkenny, Joe Snowdon, Fletcher Holman, James Ball, Joel McGregor and Harry Smith out for the visitors.
Preferred XI:
GK - Nathan Trott
RB - Ronan Kpakio
RCB - Calum Chambers
LCB - Gabriel Osho
LB - Joel Bagan
CDM - Alex Robertson
CM - Robert Tankiewicz
CAM - Cian Ashford
RW - Isaak Davies
LW - Chris Willock
ST - Yousef Salech
Score Prediction:
Cardiff City 3-0 Swindon Town
I expect a strong Cardiff side, and a score-line to resemble that ahead of a huge season opener in a week's time.
