A young Bluebirds side have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup after a 5-3 defeat against Southampton this evening.

Cian Ashford congratulating goal scorer Rubin Colwill.

The Saints took an early lead through Matheus Fernandez, The Portuguese midfielder finished excellently from the edge of the box.

Cardiff were level not long later, after an outrageous striker from Rubin Colwill from 30 yards left Joe Lumley rooted to the spot.

Southampton regained the lead not long before half-time. Some great build up play was finished off by a smart finish from Amo-Ameyaw.

City started the second half sharper, and reaped the rewards as Ronnie Edwards fired into his own net.

Archer would put the visitors back in front after 55 minutes with a tidy finish in the box.

The Bluebirds refused to lay down, as Ex-Portsmouth midfielder Alex Robertson put City level just two minutes later, with a calm finish in the box.

Cody Twose came close to winning the game late on, as a loose ball fell to the 18 year-old who narrowly fired wide.

A quick fire double from James Bree and Cameron Archer was enough to secure The Saints' place in the next round.

Player Ratings:

Jak Alnwick (5) - Southampton were quality in front of goal, and Alnwick couldn't have done a great deal about many of the goals. Swept loose balls really well.

Ronan Kpakio (6.5) - Held his own really well against a good winger in Sam Edozie. Added offensively in the second half as he grew into the game. A 17 year-old up against a winger who cost £10M, Kpakio did a hell of a job.

Dimitrios Goutas (4.5) - Struggled against Archer who just appeared a step ahead. Spun a little easily by Archer. Only positive really comes on the ball, Dimi was decent in possession.

Malachi Fagan-Walcott (5.5) - Put his body in the way for a few efforts. Solid enough defensively and passing was pin point. Looked decent despite conceding five.

Joel Bagan (6) - Decent enough against a lively winger. Looked to progress City with passes in behind, a few came off, looked decent offensively.

Andy Rinomhota (4.5) - Rino failed really to put his stamp on the game. Southampton seemed to just be strolling past him at times.

Adeteye Gbadehan (6) - Tried to put his stamp on the game, and pressed fairly well in his time on the pitch, could've been stronger in a couple of duels, but was ok otherwise.

Raheem Conte (7.5) - Nice to see Conte being positive and running at defenders, and got two assists for it, great response to a frustrating outing against Bristol Rovers.

Rubin Colwill (8.5) MOTM - What can you say? A truly incredible goal. And that wasn't it, Southampton just didn't have an answer to Colwill. Effected the game all over the park and posed a constant threat. A message sent to Bellamy, for sure.

Cian Ashford (7) - An energetic performance from Ashford. A great defensive showing and looked to get forward, got in some great areas just wasn't found. Thoroughly enjoyed watching Ashford this evening.

Michael Reindorf (7) - Gave absolutely everything. Love Reindorf's tenacity. Does well to keep the ball to lay off Colwill. Decision making can be better at times, but that comes with experience.

Subs:

Alex Robertson (8) - Such an intelligent footballer. Came on and offered what Cardiff lacked in the first half. A goal taken really well. Linked with Colwill really well.

Cody Twose (5) - Almost had the dream debut with a close effort. Perhaps harsh, but would've liked to have seen him just clear the ball for the fourth, but better decision making comes with more minutes.

Isaac Jefferies (N/A) - Nice moment for Jefferies who has had his injury sturggles over the last year.

Conclusion:

An enjoyable evening of football. Good football played by both sides. A lot to be excited by with these young City players coming through.
