Cardiff City are on the road for the first time this season as they travel to face John Eustace's Derby County.

The Opposition:

In John Eustace's first full season in charge, the Rams narrowly missed out on the play-offs by four points last season. Recording a 9th-place finish.

It's been a quiet summer to date for Derby. Bobby Clark was brought in on a permanent deal from RB Salzburg following a successful loan. Alex Mowatt has also joined the Rams from West Brom. Charlie Taylor from Southampton, Ryan Hedges from Blackburn Rovers, and Filip Bilbija from SC Paderborn have also joined on free transfers.

Eustace favours an organised, disciplined and pragmatic approach, with his teams typically prioritising defensive structure and compactness. His sides look to press intelligently without becoming overly aggressive, while remaining difficult to break down in transition. In possession, he prefers quick, purposeful combinations and exploiting space rather than dominating the ball for its own sake. His teams are also strong in set-pieces and counter-attacking situations, making them capable of hurting opponents after winning possession.

The Bluebirds:

City come into this one on the back of a dramatic opening day draw with Wrexham. Rubin Colwill's 98th-minute stunner secured Cardiff their first point back in the Championship.

The Bluebirds could counter Eustace’s compact structure by moving the ball quickly and constantly rotating positions to create gaps between the lines. Cardiff should use aggressive width and overloads to stretch Eustace’s defensive block, before attacking the spaces created with quick combinations and third-man runs. Out of possession, Barry-Murphy’s intense counter-pressing would also be crucial to prevent Eustace’s side from turning defensive recoveries into dangerous counter-attacks.

Opposition Player to Watch:

Carlton Morris in action.

Derby's number nine is one of the best the division has to offer in terms of strikers. Morris is a physical, intelligent striker who excels at linking play, holding the ball up and bringing teammates into attacks. He combines his aerial strength and movement in the box with a strong work rate, making him effective both as a focal point and when attacking crosses and second balls.

Morris' career started at Norwich City. The striker spent time on loan at Oxford United, York City, Hamilton Academical, Rotherham United, Shrewsbury Town, and MK Dons, before finally completing a permanent move away from Carrow Road to Barnsley. Morris netted sixteen goals in his season and a half with the Tykes before joining Luton Town. The striker spent three seasons with Luton, netting thirty-nine goals, including eleven in the Premier League. Following the Hatters' back-to-back relegation, Morris moved to Pride Park in the summer of 2025. The 30-year-old netted twelve goals in his first season at the club.

The last time these two sides met was in the midst of a relegation battle, with the Bluebirds running out winners over the Rams that day.

Callum Robinson opened the scoring just after the hour mark, pouncing on a spill from goalkeeper Jacob Zetterström. Anwar El Ghazi added a second just two minutes later with a neat finish inside the box. Lars-Jørgen Salvesen added a consolation for Derby, but it wasn't enough as Ömer Riza's Cardiff sealed three points.

Team News:

Cardiff City - Late checks to be made on Gabriel Osho and Calum Chambers. Dylan Lawlor and Will Fish remain out for the Bluebirds.

Derby County - Sam Szmodics a doubt for the hosts. Matt Clarke, Patrick Agyemang, Rhian Brewster, and Derry Murkin are out for the hosts.

Preferred XI:

GK - Nathan Trott

RB - Perry Ng

RCB - Calum Chambers

LCB - Joel Bagan

LB - Calum Scanlon

CDM - Alex Robertson

CM - Joel Colwill

CAM - Jack Moylan

RW - Isaak Davies

LW - Chris Willock

ST - Yousef Salech

Score Prediction:

Derby County 1-1 Cardiff City

Both sides are heavily injury-hit in key areas. I see a close affair with the points being shared.
