Cardiff City have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup after a 3-1 defeat to Chelsea.

Marc Guiu had the only notable chance of the first half. The Spaniard was played in behind by Moises Caicedo, but the striker was denied by a fine foot save from Nathan Trott.

Chelsea took the lead around the hour mark through substitute Alejandro Garnacho. Dylan Lawlor's pass went straight to Facundo Buoananotte who played in Garnacho, and the winger made no mistake from close range.

Cardiff hit back fifteen minutes later with a sublime header from David Turnbull. Perry Ng crossed the ball to the Scotsman who guided his header into the top corner to bring the game back level.

The visitors retook the lead through Pedro Neto. Andrey Santos found Neto on the right wing, the winger powerfully struck his effort into the far post and put Chelsea back in front. Garnacho added his second in added time to seal the victory for Enzo Maresca's men.

Player Ratings:

Nathan Trott (7) - Made some real good saves from close range in key moments for City. Not much can be done for the goals. Distribution was good.

Perry Ng (8) - An excellent cross for the goal. Up against the trick Jamie Gittens held his own, working well with Ashford. Slick on the ball.

Dylan Lawlor (4.5) - A tough one but a great learning curve for Lawlor. Had been warned once or twice with sloppy passes before being punished. Did however make some key blocks and nice tackles.

Calum Chambers (8) - Exceptional in the first half, stepping up almost as a number six and did it brilliantly. Got City up the pitch throughout. Made some key defensive contributions, and really stood up to the challenge. Pleasing outing.

Joel Bagan (7) - Defensively made some key challenges in and around the City box. Linked nicely with Willock when he came on, played some nice balls in behind for him and Davies.

Ryan Wintle (7) - Real tidy showing in possession, looked to get Cardiff forward but also recycled well. Out of possession was in and out of the game, but generally was alright.

David Turnbull (9) MOTM - By far Turnbull's best game in a Cardiff City shirt, topped off with a stunning goal. Retained the ball really well, and generally didn't look fazed when he had the ball with some fine feet. Out of possession a real positive for Cardiff.

Joel Colwill (7) - Grew into the game and imposed himself well out of possession. Plays a part in the goal with tidy play.

Cian Ashford (7.5) - Another real positive Cian Ashford performance. Plays his part in the goal, also. Carried the ball well and looked a constant threat. Good out of possession, also.

Isaak Davies (7.5) - Same story as Ashford in many ways. Pace looked a real threat and Davies' directness definitely seemed to concern Chelsea. Worked hard out of possession.

Callum Robinson (5) - Just never got in the game. Took a glorious chance off the foot of Davies with a weak header. Failed to offer a great deal.

Subs:

Chris Willock (8) - Made a real impact for Cardiff, and caused Chelsea some problems. Direct and effective. Good out of possession, also.

Yousef Salech (6.5) - Ran the front line relatively well. Linkup play was good.

Alex Robertson (N/A)

Will Fish (N/A)

Summary:

A real good performance against one of the best sides in the world. No shame in losing the way Cardiff did, that's for sure. Lessons learnt and full focus on a paramount few months ahead!
