Cardiff are back on the road as they travel to Loftus Road to face Julien Stéphan's QPR.

The Opposition:

Julien Stéphan's opening season at the R's was littered with injuries and inconsistency, leading to a 15th-place finish. The Frenchman was rewarded with a new contract this summer.

QPR have had an impressive summer window so far. Adding Pierce Charles from Manchester City, Glen Kamara from Stade Rennais, Dennis Cirkin from Sunderland, Calum Ward from Motherwell, Tariq Lamptey from Fiorentina, and Boy Kemper from NAC Breda.

Stéphan favours an intense, possession-oriented style built around positional fluidity, short passing and creating multiple options around the ball. His teams look to maintain a compact structure out of possession, pressing aggressively in transition while protecting the centre of the pitch. He is also tactically flexible, adapting his approach to the players available and the strengths of the opposition.

The Bluebirds:

Cardiff come into this one on the back of a 2-2 draw with Sheffield United. The Bluebirds dominated throughout, but goals from Jack Moylan and Cian Ashford weren't enough to get City's first three points since their return to the Championship.

Brian Barry-Murphy's side could counter Stéphan’s possession game by pressing aggressively around the ball and using positional rotations to disrupt their passing structure, rather than allowing them to dictate the tempo. Cardiff should also exploit spaces left when Stéphan’s midfield pushes forward, using quick switches and direct runs beyond the defensive line. Maintaining width and a strong counter-press would then help Cardiff regain control quickly and prevent Stéphan’s side from building sustained attacks.

Opposition Player to Watch:

Ilias Chair in action.
Ilias Chair in action.

After missing the majority of last season with injury, Chair has had an excellent start to the new campaign, regaining his previous exceptional form. Chair is a diminutive, highly technical playmaker who thrives between the lines, using close control, dribbling and quick combinations to create openings. He also possesses an excellent final ball and a threat from distance.

Born in Belgium, Chair is a product of the Lierse academy. Chair completed a move to QPR in 2017. It's only after a loan spell at Stevenage in 2019, where Chair contributed with twelve goal involvements in sixteen games, that Chair has really broken through. Chair has made 269 QPR appearances, contributing thirty-nine goals and forty-seven assists.

Last Meeting:

QPR 0-0 Cardiff City (2025)

It was a dull affair the last time these two sides met. Playing out a 0-0 draw, without either side registering a big chance.

A point at Loftus Road saw the Bluebirds remain in the relegation zone, as they went on to get relegated just a few weeks later.

Team News:

Cardiff City - Will Fish and Dylan Lawlor remain out injured for the Bluebirds.

QPR - Boy Kemper, Jonathan Obikwu, and Karamoko Dembélé are absent through injury for the hosts.

Preferred XI:

GK - Nathan Trott

RB - Perry Ng

RCB - Gabriel Osho

LCB - Krystian Bielik

LB - Calum Scanlon

CDM - Alex Robertson

CM - Rubin Colwill

CAM - Cian Ashford

RW - Ollie Tanner

LW - Chris Willock

ST - Yousef Salech

Score Prediction:

QPR 1-1 Cardiff City

Two fairly evenly matched sides. I see another stalemate for City.
