Cardiff City suffered their first defeat in the Vertu Trophy this evening, as they lost 1-0 to Newport County.

Nathan Opoku had some great chances early on for the visitors. The striker's first effort hit the crossbar, and then the Leicester-loanee was soon denied one-vs-one by Matt Turner.
County did however take the lead just before the break. Ex-City fullback Tom Davies pounced on an inviting Kai Whitmore cross.
City had a handful of chances in an univentful second half, as the away side saw things out to secure victory.
Player Ratings:
Matt Turner (7) - Made a couple of decent saves between the sticks. Distribution was fairly decent as well. Sweeped up nicely.
Will Spiers (6) - Did have moments where you saw glimpses. Some tidy stuff and decent passing. Defensively did struggle at times.
Will Fish (7) - Made some key interventions for City. Passing range was decent as usual. Commanded things well.
Calum Chambers (5.5) - Defensively did well enough, and worked nicely with Parfitt. Sometimes just that touch too slow on the ball, however I think that was more due to the shear lack of movement in front of Chambers.
T-Jay Parfitt (7.5) MOTM - Stepped in and gave a real good account of himself. Got properly stuck in and pulled City out of danger on a few occasions. Defensively very solid. One to watch, for sure!
Ryan Wintle (5.5) - Just looked a touch off the boil. Did some nice things out of possession but at times was just very slow to react. On the ball was okay, same as Chambers really. Just looks tired and in need of a break.
David Turnbull (5) - Yellow card completely changed Turnbull's game. Started off fairly tidy, but after the card looked unwilling to go into any kind of challenge, and it meant for a very passive midfield. Pretty unimaginative on the ball.
Troy Perrett (6) - Pretty busy for City both centrally and wide. Had a decent chance or two as well. Just a tidy and safe performance.
Omari Kellyman (6) - Unable to get in the game at all. Had a couple of long rangers deflected but generally a quiet evening.
Robert Tankiewicz (6) - What you probably expected from Tankiewicz. One or two nice glimpses and battled hard. Will grow with more confidence.
Yousef Salech (5.5) - Didn't do a great deal to pose Newport a threat, however had little to no supply at all.
Subs:
Jack Kingdon (7) - Adapted quite well out of position. Solid in the tackle and carried the ball fairly well.
Axel Donczew (6.5) - Gave it a good go and moved well off the ball. Played with freedom, decent debut and one to watch!
Callum Robinson (5.5) - Just couldn't get into the game and was wasteful when called upon.
Joel Bagan (6.5) - Solid enough.
Summary:
A disappointing evening but a huge learning curve for so many of these elite talents!
