CARDIFF BACK IN THE CAPITAL

The Bluebirds return to the Welsh capital, hoping to secure their first win of the season as they welcome Mark Robins' Stoke City.

The Opposition:
Stoke had an excellent first half of the 25/26 season, with the Potters looking set for a play-off battle; however, a disastrous second half of the season saw Stoke stumble down the table, eventually registering a 17th-place finish.
Mark Robins and Stoke spent big this summer, as they finally look to escape the Championship this season. The Potters recruited George Hirst from Ipswich Town, Ethan Galbraith from Swansea City, Jake McGlynn from Houston, Josh Griffiths from West Brom, Ben Johnson from Ipswich Town, Svante Ingelsson from Sheffield Wednesday, Djibril Soumaré from Braga, Luca Bombino from San Diego, Luke Graham from Dundee, Justin Devenny from Crystal Palace, as well as Milan Smit from Go Ahead Eagles, however, Smit has already departed the club on loan.
Robins favours an adaptable, possession-direct style, often using a back three with wing-backs providing width and a double pivot controlling build-up. His teams are comfortable playing out from the back but will go direct when the opportunity arises, particularly to exploit space in behind. Out of possession, they press with intensity and look to restrict central areas.
The Bluebirds:
City come into this one on the back of a disappointing defeat against Portsmouth. Despite dominating spells of the game, City were undone by two soft goals, leaving them winless after five league games.
Cardiff could exploit Robins’ back-three system by pressing the wide centre-backs and wing-backs aggressively, forcing Stoke into uncomfortable passes. Cardiff should then use quick rotations and switches to target the spaces behind the wing-backs, particularly with runners attacking the channels. In possession, patient circulation can draw Stoke's midfield out before Cardiff accelerate through the gaps created centrally.
Opposition Player to Watch:

Stoke's expensive summer acquisition, Ethan Galbraith, is already paying off, with the Northern Irish international off to a strong start to the season. Galbraith is a technically gifted central midfielder who excels in possession, using his vision, passing range and composure to dictate play from deeper areas. He combines intelligent movement with ball-carrying ability and can operate as a deep-lying playmaker or more advanced No.8.
The midfielder is a product of the Manchester United academy. Galbraith spent spells on loan at Doncaster Rovers and Salford City before joining Leyton Orient permanently in 2023. After two seasons at the O's, Galbraith made the step up to the Championship with Swansea City. After a season at the Swans, Galbraith joined Stoke. The 25-year-old has netted three in his opening five games as a Potter.
Last Meeting:
Cardiff City 0-1 Stoke City (2025)

With both sides firmly sat in the relegation dogfight, it was the Potters who ran out winners last time the two sides met.
The first half provided very little excitement. The last ten minutes were when the game burst into life, with Isaak Davies missing a chance on the goal line to put the Bluebirds in front. Will Fish then converted into his own net to give the visitors a valuable three points.
Team News:
Cardiff City - Dylan Lawlor, Isaak Davies, Will Fish, and Calum Chambers are all out for the Bluebirds.
Stoke City - Late decision is to be made on Sam Gallagher. Aaron Cresswell, Junior Tchamadeu, Ben Gibson, and Svante Ingelsson are out injured.
Preferred XI:
GK - Nathan Trott
RB - Perry Ng
RCB - Gabriel Osho
LCB - Krystian Bielik
LB - Joel Bagan
CDM - David Turnbull
CM - Joel Colwill
CAM - Rubin Colwill

Score Prediction:
